Diners rave about the set menu, offering three courses and a drink for only £25, representing fantastic value without compromising on quality. The engaging and knowledgeable staff elevate the experience, providing insights into the dishes and helping guests navigate the extensive wine list. The comfortable atmosphere receives frequent praise as well, with many noting its romantic setting that’s perfect for a special evening out. Like any restaurant, Cognac is not without its critiques. Some guests have noted inconsistency with side dishes like the frites, which have been described as floppy at times. A few diners have experienced delays during busier hours, leading to a less-than-ideal dining experience. While most feedback sings praises of the service, a handful of reviews mention moments of inattention during peak times. Additionally, space can feel tight when the restaurant is bustling, impacting the overall comfort. Despite these occasional shortcomings, they often pale in comparison to the restaurant's many strengths.
Visited last night for the set menu special 3 courses for £25 including a drink. This was great value and the quality of food was still excellent. I had the Pork and Apple main and my partner had the steak. We will definitely be visiting again. Was too excited to start eating so forgot to take any photos of my food, just my husbands steak. A lovely atmosphere and setting.
Outstanding food. The snails& muscles were cooked perfectly, the pork, duck and pudding was amazing... You need to book if you love great french food the wine was perfect for our dish. Would recommend day in day out. Thank you for such an amazing evening.
Very flavourful halibut plate and good deserts with excellent presentation. A good wine will not cost an arm and a leg, and the service is excellent. Previous review... Frites were floppy, but mussels marvelous. Best onion soup ever. Sure we will rate Cognac a five on our next visit. Service top notch. An authentic French atmosphere.
First time visiting this evening and was the best dining experience in years. Staff extremely attentive and knowledgeable on the menu, including how certain items on the menu are cooked, how they taste etc. Service very quick and consistent. The food was absolutely incredible on both presentation and taste, I was lost for words. Interior was very comfortable with a range of seating, atmosphere romantic and relaxing. Special mention to Paulo (manager, presumably) for looking after us so well for the entire evening and compliments to the chef for such lovely food. We will definitely be back soon.
Edit for 3rd trip recently, food is still fantastic, staff still very accomodating - still the best place in Hull! Been twice and both times the food was fantastic. Snails and steak are both incredibly well cooked. Very good red wine and the staff really look after you. I've been when it's been quiet (Tuesday evening) and on a weekend and found the food and service both to be top notch consistently. Creme brulee was cracking too! Highly recommend.
Went to cognac on a date with my partner, we have spoken about trying this place for months, I had the martini Parisian cocktail and my partner had the French kiss, he found his cocktail lovely but only if it was a dessert cocktail. I quite enjoyed mine it didn’t taste alcoholic though. I had the calamari to start, when it arrived I was surprised as the calamari was bartered for some reason I thought it wouldn’t be anyway, it wasn’t the nicest it did kind of taste like the ones you could get from the premium range at Tescos. My partner had the muscles which where truly incredible. Oh my goodness for my mains I had beef bourguignon which was absolutely incredible, the meat was so lovely and melted in your mouth, my partner had the filet mignon which was amazing and the mash was just amazing. We will 100% be coming back. If you get the chance to go then please go. Also the bar staff and the service staff were very attentive and kind, I couldn’t fault them
Great place to visit for good food, friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere. Value for money.
